Firefox Flicks is the community marketing campaign, as part of Spread Firefox, that we've been rolling out for the Firefox 1.5 launch. It has two major components: Testimonials and Ads.
Testimonials is where people who love Firefox tell others in their own words why they should switch over from that other browser for an even better Web experience. We're awarding weekly prizes along with a grand prize, and we'll be featuring the best of the best in an upcoming awareness blitz.
For the next phase, we're looking into rolling out an API to the video and location database to enable content syndication and mash up. The current Flash-based viewer and submission tool is just the start!
The second component of Firefox Flicks will be Ads, a contest that will encourage the development and submission of high-quality 30-second commercials for Firefox by aspiring and professional film and video producers/directors. (We trialed this idea earlier this year in Europe with the Funny Fox videos, produced pro bono by the Pozz Agency in France.)
We'll be awarding some awesome prizes (e.g. funniest, best animated, best overall, etc.) and we've now confirmed a panel of really excellent judges from across the film industry to lend their celebrity and expertise to the competition. We're also reaching out to film schools to encourage submissions, and we've been approached by film festivals about possible collaboration.
Full details will be announced this week, as the team formally launches this component of Firefox Flicks.
