Don't Miss a Single Goal

We're really excited to announce the availability of the Joga.com Companion, Powered by Firefox.  We developed this new Firefox 1.5 add-on with Google and their partners, and we think that it's particularly cool (of course, we're biased!) as it allows football/soccer fans to:

  • customize their browser with one of 32 national team themesSnapshots
  • track the latest scores and headlines
  • view awesome football videos
  • connect with communities of football fans
  • and, receive up-to-the-minute match and goal notifications while browsing the Web

This is a project that came together rather quickly and we’re very excited to get this out the door and into the hands of football fans worldwide!  English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese are supported now, with other languages on the way.

Check it out!  Go to the Joga.com Companion page where you can easily install the Firefox add-on, or, if you're not yet a Firefox user, you can get a full Firefox 1.5 with Joga.com Companion built right in.

For more information, please visit: http://www.mozilla.com/add-ons/jogacompanion/

BTW, we do plan on open sourcing the underlying framework and code we developed to build this add-on -- although we still have some work to do in terms of licensing and code review -- we'll get to that now that we've shipping version 1.0. However, the graphics, trademarks and sports feeds used to build the official Joga.com Companion have been licensed from third-parties and will not be open sourced.

We hope you enjoy it!

Behavior in Bon Echo on windows is less than perfect. I'm not saying it should work in bon echo, just that it should display a sane message saying it doesn't work. Currently, it takes me to a page that says I'm going to download this extension, and after that, to restart Firefox (yes, it said Firefox.)

Then, I download the file (which is an exe) and it's 5.9 megs! :o Guess what? It's a Firefox installer. I don't remember asking for that, I don't remember anyone telling me I was going to get that.

I tried enquiring in #developers on moznet but got little sympathy.

Cameron: Thanks for the feedback. We've been working with Google on the download page logic, and hope to have an update in place tomorrow. You're right, it's not perfect yet. We also did not target Bon Echo as a priority, but will publish instructions on how to get the Joga.com Companion to work. The one thing that we know that doesn't work in Bon Echo is the chrome themes. Our target was Firefox 1.5.

I really don't like that you can't turn off the team picture in the main bar (though I do like the picture switching). Also, it's shoved my bookmarks in my bookmarks toolbar folder right as they are level with where the flag has been put.

Here we go again. More fat US corporates jumping on the football bandwagon.

The "Headlines" in the side bar would be much more useful if the "World Cup 2006: " text the prefixes almost all of them were dropped.

Would also be nice if I could have the headlines opening in a new tab (even if it required a right click and context menu). As it is it keeps going over what I'm looking at.

Paul: Unfortunately those are the actual headlines being put out over the wire. We'll take a look to see what we can do to make that more usable.

Paul: We're working on a revision now that will add a default Firefox + Joga.com theme as well as a "No Theme" option. It should be released soon. Thanks for the feedback!

It's nice that the scoreboard shows upcoming matches, but it's missing some. Tomorrow's USA v Italy match doesn't show up for some reason.

OK, we've released an update which addresses all of the issues raised here. You should receive an update notification within the next 24 hours. See http://cbeard.typepad.com/mozilla/2006/06/jogacom_compani.html for more information. Thanks for your feedback!
