It's been an exciting week for everyone involved in the Mozilla project. We launched Firefox 2 last Tuesday, and all over the world, the response has been enthusiastic, positive and loud.
Some highlights from the first week:
- Firefox 2 simultaneously shipped in 37 languages for Windows, Mac and Linux. (This is more than we've ever done at once before, with even more languages to come!)
- More than 5,000 supporters and advocates attended one of 600 parties in over 50 countries, with some reports that attendance was actually more than twice that! (Check out photos from celebrations in Paris, Chennai and San Mateo!)
- More than 2 million recommended Firefox add-ons were installed by people personalizing their browsing experience.
- Products reviews for Firefox 2 have been awesome, with press and analysts recognizing the Mozilla project’s dedication and focus on improving the Internet experience for people everywhere. Among the many accolades, Firefox 2 has received both a CNET Editors' Choice Award and a PC Magazine Editors' Choice award.
- Far surpassing our previous releases, in terms of sheer numbers and global reach, millions of new people around the world were introduced to Firefox this week, joining the tens of millions who have already been enjoying a better online experience with Firefox.
The results so far from the Firefox 2 launch have energized all of us in the ongoing pursuit of our public benefit, nonprofit mission to make the Web experience better for everyone. We believe that the Web matters, and that people are demonstrating that having a choice in how they get on the Web also matters.
More soon.
PS: If you haven’t already, be sure to also check out Mitchell Baker’s blog post around the release.
In response to your responses to the Slashdot interview: you sound very much like a politician. You successfully answered many of the questions without an answer at all. You even managed to deride Opera and Safari. I use Firefox (and Opera), I suggest (or mandate) it to everyone I know, but please.. don't dishearten us with this corporate shill in the future. Thank you, Ryan. Feel free to respond.
